Indonesia Directory
With a population in excess of 200 million people, Indonesia is made up of 17,508 islands located in Southeastern Asia between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean
The vast and steamy archipelago is well known for its cultural diversity. On Balinese New Year, Nyepi, (March-April) everything shuts and the island grinds to a standstill as locals seek to convince evil spirits that the island is uninhabited.
One of the most popular islands for Indonesian tourists is Bali. This tropical paradise attracts a large number of its tourists for the beautiful white sand beaches that offer some of the best surf in the world. While Bali reflects much of the culture of the Indonesian islands, it has come to have a uniqueness of its own. In nearby Java, the volcanic craters are a popular attraction. The craters exude a natural beauty, especially Mount Bromo, which attracts crowds wishing to hike the still-rumbling volcano.
Shopping is available in all parts of the archipelago. Arguably the best place to shop in Indonesia is in Bali where every conceivable item is available for sale. Souvenirs, arts and crafts, clothes, batik, and woodcarvings are offered by street vendors in roads that stretch kilometers. An exciting part of shopping in Bali is bargaining with the street vendors. The prices are marked extremely high so it is suggested you bargain down the vendor to a price you think is suitable for the item on offer.
